The Health Science degree gives students the opportunity to master the basic sciences, fulfill graduate school entry prerequisites, gain a deep understanding of the intersection of healthcare and public health and the impact of health and illness on society. Students will take courses that introduce them to the United States healthcare system and beyond, expanding their knowledge of evidence-based healthcare, health policy and administration, and quality-of-care improvement.

This major is also flexible enough to allow room for minors, combined majors and global opportunities.

Students will take courses that provide them with a strong foundation in research methods and pre-health and pre-med preparation. Students interested in graduate school in any of the below may opt to follow a pre-health focus, which includes courses required for medical school and other clinical training programs.

Pre-Physical Therapy

Northeastern’s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program offers guaranteed acceptance to NU undergraduate students who meet the established criteria. Students are also able to take advantage of the Double Husky Scholarship when enrolling in the DPT program, which offers a 25% tuition discount.

Capstone

During their senior year, students participate in a Capstone experience to broaden and integrate the knowledge, skills, and experience gained from the health science major. Capstones can take the form of service projects, research projects, seminars, or honors projects.

Co-op and
Experiential Learning

Students in our Health Science major learn the value of working as members of a healthcare team in the class setting as well as on co-op. Our co-op positions allow students to learn and recognize the importance of professional behaviors both in the classroom and in the workplace. Students have the option to complete the program with or without a Co-op experience, however an experiential learning component is required for all Northeastern students. Students also have opportunities study away or abroad, including at Northeastern’s global campuses, as are our Dialogue of Civilizations programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I do with a Health Science degree?

A degree in Health Science is very flexible and versatile. Some students will go on to advanced graduate degrees such as medical school or PA school. Other students will explore careers in health administration, research, public policy or education. Many students take advantage of our PlusOne option to stay for an additional year and receive a master’s in public health.

What types of co-op can I do?

Health Science students frequently do clinical or research related co-ops, but there are so many options. Popular options include clinical research, medical assistant, ophthalmic assistant, patient care associate and research assistant. Students do not need experience prior to Northeastern to be able to participate in these co-ops.

Can I be pre-med or pre-pa?

Health Science is one of the most popular majors at Northeastern for students applying to medical school or PA school. A major in health science provides rigorous academics in prerequisite coursework as well as first-hand experience in the healthcare field. Students interested in pre-med or pre-PA will work with the PreHealth Advising office as well as their academic advisors to make sure they are on track to apply.

Can I study abroad?

Yes!! All students can have a global experience, regardless of their major. There are many options for students, including Dialogue of Civilizations, a short-term summer program that is a unique and popular choice for Northeastern students. Mobility is a key component of the Northeastern student experience, and opportunities are available at Northeastern’s global campuses.
