Northeastern University’s Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences has launched a new Master of Science in Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences, a STEM-certified program designed to prepare the next generation of scientists for careers at the intersection of biology, chemistry, data, and AI.
The program builds on Northeastern’s standing as the #1-ranked private university for NIH research funding, giving students direct access to faculty leading breakthroughs in drug discovery, drug delivery, and biomedical innovation. Set in the heart of Boston’s biomedical ecosystem — one of the most concentrated pharma-biotech hubs in the world — students will work alongside industry partners, hospitals, and research institutions shaping where the field goes next.
All students complete a shared interdisciplinary core before choosing one of four concentrations:
- Immunotherapy and Precision Medicine — biologics, biosimilars, antibody engineering, CAR-T, and gene-editing technologies
- Advanced Drug Delivery and Formulation Sciences — nanomedicine, targeted delivery, controlled-release systems, and regulatory science
- Translational Pharmacology and Drug Discovery — medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, AI/ML, cheminformatics, and molecular design
- Biomedical Sciences — a cross-disciplinary path drawing advanced coursework from all three tracks
“This master’s program provides students with the in-depth technical training and research expertise needed to advance careers across the biotech, pharmaceutical, academic and healthcare sectors,” said Stephen M. Hatfield, PhD, Assistant Professor and Interim Program Director. “Guided by faculty at the forefront of pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences, students gain hands-on experience in translational research in biotechnology, immunotherapy and precision medicine, drug discovery and formulation, advanced drug delivery systems, and AI/ML-enabled drug development.”
The 33-credit, full-time program admits for the fall semester only, with applications due August 1 for domestic students and June 1 for international applicants requiring an F-1 visa. GRE scores are optional.
