Nursing
redefining what’s possible
Our innovative nursing program combines foundational practices, clinical experiences, and real-world simulations to prepare students for a successful patient care career. Our educators and mentors come from some of the country’s world’s finest health facilities such as Boston Children’s, Mass General, Tufts Medical, and Brigham and Women’s, and many other top-rated hospitals.
In addition to our robust clinical opportunities, our world-renowned co-op program offers collaborative learning opportunities that prepare students by deepening their learning and applying themselves as nurses in the 21st century.
Students with no previous degrees or college courses should apply through Northeastern’s undergraduate application process. Students who already have a baccalaureate degree in a field other than nursing can extend and strengthen their education through our Direct Entry Nursing Program or Accelerated BSN programs.

The undergraduate nursing curriculum is designed to give students the knowledge, skills, and professional values that will put you in the position to graduate practice ready. Northeastern nursing graduates have the skills, experiences and connections to enter the healthcare field successfully. To help you understand the complexities of health and illness across the life span, the curriculum draws on:
You will build confidence as you put your nursing skills into practice caring for patients during academic and co-op experiences to graduate practice ready.
Nursing students typically will graduate in 4 years while also participating in two six-month long co-ops, 6 clinical courses and a senior practicum.
Please view the university’s academic catalog for full course details.
The skills and procedures you learn in the nursing courses, including time in our simulation center, prepare you for the clinical courses to come.
Nursing students at Northeastern do both clinicals and co-ops.
Clinicals are a hands-on training requirement for nursing students where you will be with a clinical instructor and receive a grade for your clinical course. Students will have hands on experience in a clinical setting and receive academic credit. Students are assigned to a clinical site. The clinical course has specific sites related to the learning objectives and you will do clinical at one of those locations. We have relationships with amazing hospitals which students get the benefit of.
Co-op is a full time six-month long (usually paid) position where students are immersed in a clinical setting of their choosing. Northeastern nursing students graduate with over a year of full-time work experience, setting them apart from other graduates.
Students complete a senior practicum. This is an exciting opportunity where you work alongside a practicing nurse. This is a clinical course, and you receive a grade for the course along with academic credit.
Northeastern University’s Nursing Program equips students for NCLEX success through dynamic coursework designed to enhance critical thinking and develop strong clinical judgment skills. What distinguishes Northeastern from other programs is its emphasis on experiential learning, hands-on practice, and evidence-based techniques, ensuring graduates are well-prepared to excel in the demands of the nursing profession.
The prelicensure programs at the Northeastern University School of Nursing are approved by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
Students with no previous degrees or college courses should apply through Northeastern’s undergraduate application process. Instructions for how to apply and next steps can be found on Northeastern’s How to Apply page. Note that there is no separate application process or supplements required for the Nursing Program. Students are admitted directly into the Nursing Program.
Students without a bachelor’s degree looking to transfer should reach out to the Accelerated BSN programs to learn more about transfer options.
Students who already have a baccalaureate degree in a field other than nursing have two different program options:
The Direct Entry Nursing program offers the opportunity to become a master’s-prepared nurse in the specialization of your choice. Sixteen months of nursing-specific classes (including practica) prepare students to sit for the national licensing examination (NCLEX). After passing the NCLEX and working as a registered nurse, students continue in the master’s program.
The Accelerated BSN programs in Burlington, MA, and Charlotte, NC, allow undergrads with a non-nursing background the opportunity to fast-track into the nursing field.
Learning extends beyond the classroom at Northeastern. Providing students with opportunities for thought-provoking experiential education that links coursework with the real world is central to the mission both of the University and Bouvé College of Health Sciences.
Our broad mix of experience-based programs — including co-op, student research, service learning, and global learning — build deep and lasting connections that enable Bouvé students to transform their lives, giving them valuable opportunities to practice their profession as members of a healthcare team. The co-op program provides students the opportunity to explore or refine potential career paths, make valuable industry connections, broaden perspectives, and acquire the skills and knowledge needed to succeed via a six-month placement with a company or organization in their field of interest, during which they work as a full-time employee.
The Bouvé College of Health Sciences School of Nursing has an extensive network of top-notch clinical affiliations at health centers, major teaching and community hospitals, and clinics that allow students to engage in clinical experiences covering a wide range of nursing specialties. These include:
Nursing students are actively involved on campus and in the community. Our student groups provide the opportunity to build upon your education, enhance your experience, and get to know other students both within and outside the Nursing major.
You will be eligible for any new graduate nursing position in the state you choose to take the NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination for registered nurses) exam.
Students just select “Nursing” as their major of interest on the Northeastern undergraduate application. There is not a separate application or supplement to be eligible for the nursing major. Students who enter Northeastern as a nursing major will start directly into the major.
Nursing students tend to do clinical co-ops at local hospitals, taking advantage of our proximity to some of the top-rated hospitals in the country. If you are interested, you can work with your co-op faculty advisor to locate a co-op out of state. Typical units include inpatient (adult or pediatric); outpatient, critical care, emergency departments and maternity/labor and delivery.
Yes!! All students can have a global experience, regardless of their major. There are many options for students, including Dialogues of Civilizations, a short-term summer program that is a unique and popular choice for Northeastern students. Mobility is a key component of the Northeastern student experience, and opportunities are available at Northeastern’s global campuses.
We are not currently accepting transfer students from outside of Northeastern into the Boston based undergraduate degree. Our ABSN programs do have a transfer admissions option though.
