Federal Grant for Post-Master’s DNP and MS in Nursing Leadership Students

The Nurse Faculty Load Program is a federal grant that is designated to assist registered nurses in completing their graduate education, with the goal of becoming qualified nurse faculty. Students in the Post-Master’s DNP and MS in Nursing Leadership programs at Northeastern’s Bouvé College of Health Sciences can apply.

The program offers partial loan forgiveness of up to 85 percent of the student’s NFLP loan (plus interest) if they serve for four years, full-time, as faculty in any accredited school of nursing in the United States.

How does it work?

Loans are allocated to qualified applicants on a first-come, first-served basis with priority given to prior recipients and full-time students.

NFLP loans may be used for the cost of:

  • Tuition
  • Fees
  • Books and supplies
  • Lab and other reasonable education expenses

Courses taken at institutions other than Northeastern University are not covered by NFLP.

An NFLP loan may not exceed $40,000 per student per year, for a maximum of 5 years per student.

Note: Amounts awarded with no corresponding tuition and fees will not be distributed. (For example, if your plan contains summer courses, but you are not enrolled for that summer, those funds will not be disbursed to your account.)

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the NFLP loan, borrowers must:

  • Be enrolled in the Northeastern Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) or MS in Nursing Leadership program, with plans to teach full-time at an accredited nursing school post-graduation.
  • Be a U.S. citizen, national of the U.S, or a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. or its territories.
  • Have no judgment liens entered against you based on the default on a federal debt.
  • Maintain good academic standing in the DNP or Nursing Leadership program.
  • Maintain full-time or part-time enrollment status for a minimum of 2 terms/semesters during an academic year while receiving the NFLP loan Interest Rate (3% or the prevailing market rate, depending on employment status).
  • Complete Nurse Educator Development Activities as part of the Active Training Program.
  • Establish employment as full-time faculty at an accredited school of nursing within 12 months of graduation

Active Training Program

The Northeastern University active training program incorporates the principles of equity in the recruitment, training, and graduation of students. The program uses enhanced didactic and experiential training activities to develop competencies to address health disparities, social determinants of health, and health equity for populations students will serve upon graduation.

The program also provides support for students’ employment search following graduation and connects graduates with communities of need (usually in rural and/or undeserved areas) upon graduation.

The program activities develop students’ readiness as a nurse educator, including:

  • Mentorship
  • Teaching practicum integrated in courses
  • Nurse education-focused workshops,
  • Certification which may be completed following graduation

Program Goals

The goal of the Nurse Faculty Loan Program program is to expand the nation’s capacity to train nurses by:

Increasing the number of prepared, qualified nursing faculty nationwide by supporting the training nursing students who will serve as nurse faculty upon graduation, with a focus on doctorate preparation.

Decreasing the financial barriers of serving as nurse faculty through loan cancellation.

Expanding clinical training capacity, by increasing access to designated joint nurse faculty (serving as APRN preceptors, etc.).
