John S. Clark is Associate Chief Pharmacy officer at Michigan Medicine and Clinical Professor at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy. He is responsible for acute care clinical and distribution pharmacy practice, education and professional development, and medication use system technology.
After completing a health-system pharmacy administration residency at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, Clark held several roles at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, including assistant director of pharmacy, pediatrics, and director of the pediatric pharmacy division. He joined the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers in 2007 as associate director of pharmacy.
In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Clark has trained more than 120 residents as director of Michigan Medicine’s postgraduate year 1 and 2 health-system pharmacy administration and leadership residency program.
Active in state and national pharmacy associations, Clark is a past chair of the ASHP Commission on Credentialing and visited 35 pharmacy residency training sites as an ASHP practitioner surveyor. He is also a past president of the Michigan Society if Health-System Pharmacy (MSHP) and a current member of the Michigan Pharmacist Association (MPA) Board of Directors. He is a frequent presenter at professional meetings. He is an author or co-author of 35 peer-reviewed publications, including ASHP’s annual National Trends in Drug Expenditures and Projections article and the ASHP Guidelines on the Prevention of Diversion of Controlled Substances.
Clark is a fellow of ASHP and has received man awards for his contributions to pharmacy practice, including the University of Wisconsin Winston J. Durant Lecture Award, ASHP Foundation Literature Award for Innovation in Pharmacy Practice, MSHP Pharmacist of the Year, and the MPA Wall of Honor.
Clark earned a Bachelor of Science in pharmaceutical sciences and a Doctor of Pharmacy at the University of Toledo College of Pharmacy. He earned a Master of Science in health-system pharmacy administration from the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy.
John W. Webb
The John W. Webb Lecture Award recognizes a hospital or health-system pharmacy practitioner or educator who has distinguished herself or himself through extraordinary dedication to fostering excellence in pharmacy management.
This annual award was first established as the John W. Webb Visiting Professorship in Hospital Pharmacy by the Northeastern University College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions, Boston, Massachusetts, in 1985.
John W. Webb received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1949 and his Master of Science degree in 1951 from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. Mr. Webb served as Director of Pharmacy for Hartford Hospital and served on the faculty of the University of Connecticut. He returned to Massachusetts in 1956 when he accepted the position of Assistant Director of Pharmacy at Massachusetts General Hospital. In 1959 Mr. Webb was promoted to Director of Pharmacy at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he remained until his retirement in 1983. Mr. Webb also served as Director of Graduate Program in Hospital Pharmacy at Northeastern University from its inception in 1964 until his retirement. Mr. Webb had a distinguished career in hospital pharmacy management, which included service on the ASHP Board of Directors.
In 2006, a memorandum of understanding between ASHP and Northeastern University transferred responsibility for the award to ASHP. The award recipient will deliver the lecture at the ASHP Conference for Leaders in Health-System Pharmacy and also will be invited by Northeastern University to participate in the traditional activities associated with the award as Visiting Professor in Hospital Pharmacy at the University. The ASHP Section of Pharmacy Practice Managers was bestowed the privilege of conducting the annual selection process in 2007.
