Welcome to the Speech Motor Impairment and Learning (SMILe) Lab at Northeastern University!
The SMILe Lab is dedicated to the study of motor speech disorders in children. We combine behavioral approaches, analysis of speech signals and 3D face tracking technology to understand how children’s speech is affected by motor speech disorders and to develop tools and techniques to better assess and treat these disorders.
Our Research Goals
1) To improve assessment and early identification of dysarthria (i.e., a disorder affecting control of the muscle movements for speech) in children with neurodevelopmental disabilities.
2) To develop more effective treatment methods for improving speech intelligibility and communication function in children with motor speech disorders.
