PA Leadership and Management Certificate

Northeastern University has partnered with the Center for Healthcare Leadership and Management (CHLM) to offer specialized training for those pursuing, or those who are currently in leadership and management positions within their healthcare organizations. This graduate certificate is the first of its kind in the country and is designed for PAs and those who manage PAs. The certificate’s curriculum is deliberately distinctive from that typically found in MBA or MHA programs as it focuses on critical competencies specific to managing advanced practice provider workforces.

Through this graduate certificate, students will learn how to manage conflict, communicate effectively, advocate for their ideas, measure workforce productivity and outcomes, as well as understand the nuances of PA and NP billing and reimbursement.

The PA Leadership and Management Certificate is designed for the busy healthcare provider or administrator. All classes are online and can be completed in as little as 9 months.

Admissions

Applicants will apply independently to the PA Leadership and Management Certificate Program. Applicants will need to have completed at bachelor’s degree and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 in order to be admitted to the program. Applicants may matriculate twice a year, at the beginning of either the Fall or Spring semesters. There will be a rolling admission process, and applicants will be required to submit their completed applications for the certificate program by July 15 for Fall semester matriculation and November 15 for Spring semester matriculation. Applicants will be informed of admissions decisions by August 15 for a Fall semester start and December 15 for a Spring semester start.

What are the tuition costs for the PA Leadership and Management Graduate Certificate program?

The program consists of 12 credits. For the 2018-2019 academic year, each credit hour is $900. This rate is subject to change and reflects a 37% partnership discount off of the normal per credit cost.

What kind of financial assistance is available?

Since the program offers both academic and continuing medical education credits, students are encouraged to utilize tuition reimbursement and CME reimbursement options through their employers.

How does this certificate differ from an MBA or MHA?

The majority of the content in this program will not be found in a typical MBA or MHA curriculum. It is distinctive because it focuses on critical competencies related to managing and leading PAs. This certificate allows learners to acquire leadership and management knowledge that is particular to their profession. The content will be immediately applicable to a learner’s work environment.

Are the courses offered online or in person?

The courses for the PA Leadership and Management Certificate Program are offered online to maximize flexibility for the working individual.

Can I earn CME credit as well as academic credit for the certificate classes?

Yes. In addition to earning academic credit for completed courses, students may earn 15 AAPA Category 1 CME credits per course for a total of 60 CME credits when the certificate is completed.

How long will it take me to complete the certificate?

We anticipate most learners will choose to finish the certificate in less than one year, however, enrollees will have up to four years to complete the certificate coursework.

What is the Center for Healthcare Leadership and Management (CHLM)?

CHLM is a subsidiary of the American Academy of PAs (AAPA). Although linked to the AAPA, CHLM has a slight different mission than the Academy. The CHLM team has two goals: 1) educating employers of PAs and NPs about better utilization efforts, risk mitigation, and improved billing and reimbursement practices and 2) providing leadership and management skills and competencies to PAs and NPs nationwide.
