Northeastern Pharmacy Students are Soaring…
Our students are engaged in leadership, scholarship and service at the local, regional and national levels. We are proud to share some of the many student accomplishments from this past year:
Northeastern University and the School of Pharmacy were represented on Capitol Hill for Rx Impact Day, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores’ (NACDS) event that educates members of Congress about the importance of “pro-patient, pro-pharmacy policy and key issues related to healthcare reform.” Sasha Watson, PharmD student in the class of 2019, attended and commented on her experience. “I was able to speak with seven different district offices from my home state of Florida, including some of the Representatives and their staff members. During these meetings we primarily focused on discussing provider status and opioid use legislation. I was able to see the national impact that we are having as pharmacists and the importance of us advocating for our profession.” she stated. Sasha was also able to meet other students and professionals from across the country who share the same passion for advocacy. Following the event, American Pharmacist Association Academy of Student Pharmacists hosted an event on campus where Sasha was able to share her experience with other pharmacy students and educate them about current legislative pieces and the role of pharmacists in advocacy. On the local level, students and faculty members also participated in the Face of Pharmacy, a meeting at the State House in Boston to advance House Bill 2041, an act recognizing pharmacists as health care providers.
Sasha Watson and David Lu (pictured above) attended the Clinton Global Initiative University conference held at the University of Chicago. They presented David’s ongoing research project and initiative for a method of medication disposal of unused and expired medications, particularly opioids. They competed with teams of students for the Resolution Fellowship and placed in the final top-nine teams. They heard from several outstanding speakers from across the world, as well as President Bill Clinton, Secretary Hillary Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton, and discussed ongoing issues related to myths surrounding vaccinations.
This past summer, the brothers of Phi Delta Chi returned from their national Leadership Development Seminar, where they achieved 7th place overall in the nation for the 2017-18 Thurston Award. Award criteria are based on chapter scholarship, leadership, professional/service, brotherhood, and chapter publication reports submitted throughout the year. This year marked the 5th consecutive year that the Beta Chi chapter placed in the top 10 nationally. The chapter also achieved 1st place in the nation for their John D. Grabenstein Leadership report, which will certainly be a model for other chapter’s leadership programs throughout the year.
Current P3 student, Claire Lockard, was selected as the winning student for the Northeastern University local APhA-ASP patient counseling competition. Claire will represent the School of Pharmacy at the National Patient Counseling Competition to be held at the Annual Meeting of the American Pharmacists Association in March. There she will compete against students from all colleges and schools of pharmacy from across the country.
Students Eva Huang and Cassandra Mark competed in the Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) Kroger National Clinical Skills Competition and placed 3rd. The meeting was held in Charlotte North Carolina.
Pharmacology PhD student Kate Gwilt, under the mentorship of Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences Associate Professor Greg Miller, received the Graduate Award in Health Sciences at the Northeastern University 2018 Research, Innovation and Scholarship Expo (RISE). Pharmacology PhD student Lisa Fleischer, a student in the same lab, was a finalist as well.
Doctor of Pharmacy student and founder of the Bouvé Innovators Club, Danny Jooyoung Kim, has been selected as a Rising Star in Tech by Underscore VC, a Boston-based venture capital firm.
