
Patricia Kienle of Cardinal Health receives 2018 John W. Webb Lecture Award
Northeastern University sponsored the 34th Annual John W. Webb Lecture on October 31, 2018. This year’s event was hosted on campus in Blackman Auditorium where pharmacy students, faculty and leaders were able to attend. Patricia Kienle of Cardinal Health received the 2018 John W. Webb Lecture Award and presented her speech titled Nimble Leadership: A Framework for Future Success.
Ms. Kienle is Director of Accreditation and Medication Safety for Cardinal Health Innovative Delivery Solutions where she leads efforts to ensure that client hospitals establish and maintain comprehensive, safe, and effective medication use systems in acute and non-acute care environments. Ms. Kienle began her career in 1975 as a staff pharmacist at Mercy Hospital in Wilkes-Barre, PA. She held several pharmacy leadership roles at Mercy, Mercy Health Partners, and Cardinal Health before assuming her current position in 2008.
Ms. Kienle has served on the United States Pharmacopeia’s Expert Committee on Compounding since 2010 and recently completed a term as Vice Chair. She is Chair of the Subcommittee on Hazardous Drugs and a member of the Subcommittee on Sterile Compounding and the Radiopharmaceutical expert panel. She also has served on the Pharmacotherapy Specialty Council of the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties, as the pharmacist member of the Hospital Professional and Technical Advisory Committee of the Joint Commission, and on the Board of Governors of the National Patient Safety Foundation.
A prolific author with more than 500 publications to her credit, Ms. Kienle is the author of The Chapter (800) Answer Book and co-author of the eighth edition of Assuring Continuous Compliance with Joint Commission Standards: A Pharmacy Guide. She is the editor of Understanding JCAHO Requirements for Hospital Pharmacies and developed the content for the video Compounding Sterile Preparations: ASHP’s Visual Guide to Chapter (797) and its companion guide. She is also a frequent presenter to professional groups on medication safety, compounding sterile preparations, accreditation, and regulatory issues.
An active member of local, state, and national pharmacy organizations, Ms. Kienle has served on ASHP’s Board of Directors, as a Pennsylvania delegate to the House of Delegates, and on numerous working groups and committees. She is also a former board member and Past President of the Pennsylvania Society of Health-System Pharmacists (PSHP).
Ms. Kienle has been recognized many times for her contributions to pharmacy practice. She was named a Fellow of ASHP in 1997 and was the recipient of the 2014 ASHP Board of Directors Award for Distinguished Leadership. She received the 2017 University of the Sciences Annual Alumnus Award and was named Pharmacist of the Year by PSHP in 1996.
Ms. Kienle received a B.Sc. in Pharmacy from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science and a M.P.A. in Health Service Administration from Marywood University in Scranton, PA. She completed an Executive Fellowship in Patient Safety from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA.
The John W. Webb Visiting Professorship in Hospital Pharmacy was established in 1985 at the Northeastern University College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions, now part of the Bouvé College of Health Sciences. Appointment to the John W. Webb Visiting Professorship recognizes commitment to hospital pharmacy management, experience as a practitioner and educator, and dedication to excellence in pharmacy management. Each year a hospital pharmacy practitioner is selected as the John W. Webb Visiting Professorship by a committee appointed by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. The Visiting Professor presents a lecture on excellence in pharmacy management to hospital pharmacy practitioners, administrators, residents, and the academic community. The Webb Lectures are published in the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy.
