Overview

The Nursing Administration graduate program is focused on preparing the nurse leader of the future. Our dynamic, newly revised curriculum prepares students for contemporary leadership careers in nursing administration, quality and safety, health informatics and entrepreneurial initiatives. The curriculum offers a strong foundation in complex systems thinking, organizational theory, quality improvement, finance and business and leadership practice. The final year in this program features two semesters of a Leadership Practicum (NRSG 6510 & 6520; Leadership Practicum I & II), which partners students with a nurse leader in a healthcare delivery organization and/or private business for intensive mentorship and a collaborative project.

  • Rolling admissions: Student may start in the Fall, Spring, Summer terms.
  • Full and Part-time options available.
  • A blend of on-line and classroom based courses are offered.
  • Class concepts and assignments use real-world situations to enhance student’s ability to lead change in a complex and dynamic healthcare system.
  • Opportunities for innovative thinking and networking with nurse and healthcare entrepreneurs through the Health Sciences Entrepreneurs of Bouvé College of Health Sciences.

Experiential Learning

In the last academic year of your program, you will apply for a practicum assignment, where you will work for approximately eight hours per week throughout the semester. You will work one-on-one with your master’s-prepared preceptor in higher-level operations of the organization. You will see the inner workings of the organization and observe the decision-making process first hand. You will learn the details of budgeting, staffing, human resources, daily operations, long-range planning, and more from the people in the organization who make the decisions.

Practicum opportunities are available across all sectors of the health care system, including private, public, and nonprofit institutions and community programs. Some include:

  • Partner’s Integrated Delivery Systems
  • Tufts Medical Center
  • Care Group
  • Boston Medical Center
  • Cambridge Health Alliance
  • Neighborhood Health Centers in Boston & Cambridge
  • Long-term care, hospice, and rehabilitation centers

At a weekly seminar, you will discuss issues that arise and compare notes with faculty and fellow students on approaches to resolving them. You will also write log entries on your work and on how you are implementing the “leader/manager as developer” model which Northeastern emphasizes.

Unlike programs at most other universities, Northeastern’s placement office helps you make the connection to potential work sites and your faculty visit you on site during your practicum. Interviewing with the preceptor and securing the position become part of the educational process. Because of Northeastern’s long experience and superb reputation in practice-oriented education, we are able to draw on a large array of affiliations, alumni, and professional connections to help place you in a health care setting that will enable you to reach your professional goals.
