Startup Weekend: Health Edition - Opioid Crisis

Nurse Hackathon 2018

The Nurse Innovation & Entrepreneurship Program of Northeastern University is excited to announce that we will be partnering with StartupHealth and NEUSHA for the second annual Nurse Hackathon as a part of Startup Weekend.

In October 2017, the opioid crisis was declared a national public health emergency.1

Substance misuse is a widespread affliction affecting millions in the country and across the world. Opioid misuse, in particular, isn’t confined to a single ethnicity or socioeconomic class, but rather affects people from all walks of life—including their friends, family and the healthcare system at large.

The rate of opioid addiction has grown significantly over the last 5 years, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and millions of patients suffering from addiction.

Furthermore, opioid overdose is the leading cause of death for Americans under 50 years old — killing roughly 64,000 people in 2016, at a pace faster than the H.I.V. epidemic did at its peak.2

It’s time academics, healthcare professionals, and government officials band together to combat this ever-growing issue. There is no single solution, rather a culmination of research, practice, and policy to make meaningful strides on this front.

Please check out topics of discussion at the 2018 Startup Weekend:

1. Diversion: How are the medications disappearing from the hospital to the home?
2. Nurses on the Front Line: Moderator:
3. Policy: Moderator: Is it a Crime or is it a Disease?
4. Stigma of Opioid Addiction

On Friday from noon to 4pm, expert panelists will present on the latest research, digital health, policies and procedures related to the growing opioid epidemic in advance of this outstanding three-day event.
The Hackathon itself kicks off at 6:00pm on Friday, May 18th and concludes on Sunday May 20th at 6:00pm
