The Bouvé College of Health Sciences hosted its annual Flu Clinic event, offering free vaccinations to the Husky community. Eleven Nursing and Dual-Enrollment students, along with two faculty mentors, participated in the clinic from the School of Nursing.
This event encourages learning across disciplines, allowing participants to develop their clinical skills while collaborating with others from different fields.
Mary Berry, clinical faculty at the School of Nursing, noted that the students took the lead in organizing and carrying out their roles. They managed the administration of flu vaccines and rotated through various tasks during their shifts.
Their responsibilities included greeting participants, reviewing medication details such as lot numbers and expiration dates, verifying student names, dates of birth, allergies to previous flu vaccines, and other pertinent information, and administering the flu shots.
“Each student became proficient in administering IM injections in the deltoid muscle. Their technique was superb,” Berry said.
“When the flow of students increased, our students took the initiative to manage the line and direct them to available PA, Pharmacy, and Nursing tables.”
The students were enthusiastic about participating in the clinic. They supported nervous students and created a welcoming environment by engaging with them as they received their vaccines.
“It was a great experience. I am glad to have participated in this flu clinic,” she said.
Students who missed out on this event can reach out to the Northeastern Health and Counseling Services for vaccine related resources.
