Healthy Kids Healthy Futures

Background

Family Gym is a weekly, drop-in, community-based program for children ages 3-8 and their caregivers. Developed by Professors Carmen Sceppa (Department of Health Sciences) and Jessica Hoffman (Department of Applied Psychology) in 2010 to promote physically active play and enjoyment among families, the program has been operating continuously since that time.

Service-learning students and volunteers from Northeastern University staff Family Gym. Since 2010, more than 2,500 children and caregivers have participated in Family Gym.

The goals of the current project are to expand the Family Gym program to six additional BCYF community centers around Boston neighborhoods and to develop and evaluate a more robust nutrition education component for Family Gym.
