Empowering leaders and innovators in the medical sciences.

The Department of Medical Sciences endeavors to educate and inspire interdisciplinary health professionals in medical science. We offer an interdisciplinary Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) in Healthcare Leadership, a Physician Assistant Master of Science (MSPA), and a Graduate Certificate in Extreme Medicine.

Our faculty members are practicing clinicians, researchers, and healthcare leaders who bring real-world experience to the classroom. Northeastern University’s graduates are in high demand and are employed in positions both internationally and across the United States. In addition to clinical practice, our graduates are employed in research, administration, education, and leadership.

Meet the Department Chair

Carey Barry, MHS, PA-C, DFAAPA

Professor Barry is a Physician Assistant (PA) with 20 years of clinical experience in the surgical setting. She has practiced in numerous surgical specialties including vascular surgery, cardiac surgery, and plastic surgery. Prior to becoming a physician assistant, she worked as a medical technologist in a community hospital laboratory. She has special interest in surgical training and interprofessional education.

Physician Assistant Program Learning Outcomes

Goal 1 Patient Centered Practice Knowledge

a. Gather essential and accurate information about patients through history-taking, physical examination, and diagnostic studies to provide patient-centered care.

b. Synthesize and critically evaluate the most current scientific evidence and the stories of individual patients to formulate a diagnosis and develop and implement patient management plans, provide preventative care, and promote individual well-being.

c. Perform or assist in the performance of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures associated with the management of medical and surgical conditions.

d. Identify and correct gaps in knowledge, skill, or attitude by engaging in self-motivated learning and self-reflection.

Goal 2 Society and Population Health

Integrate individual, societal, community, and global determinants of health into a shared medical decision-making approach to patient care and wellness.

Goal 3 Health Literacy and Communication

Exhibit interpersonal and communication skills that encourage effective exchange of information, awareness of unconscious bias, incorporation of health literacy, and cultural humility in order to promote improved medical outcomes and health equity.

Goal 4 Interprofessional Collaborative Practice and Leadership

Establish one’s own role and integrate knowledge of other professions in an interprofessional healthcare team that partners with the patient to advocate for and establish a patient-centered clinical approach to healthcare.

Goal 5 Professional and Legal Aspects of Healthcare

Promote the continued advancement of the Physician Assistant profession through emphasis on professional maturity and accountability, understanding of standards of care and professional integrity, and knowledge of laws and regulations that govern the delivery of healthcare.

Goal 6 Healthcare Finance and Systems

Contribute to the greater health care system though encouragement of system-based practice, cost-effective health care and resource allocation, high quality patient care, and attention to public and population health concerns.


Doctor of Medical Sciences in Healthcare Leadership Learning Outcomes

Core Courses

  • Demonstrate skills relating to different leadership practices, including decision making, communication, interpersonal interactions, conflict resolution, and motivation.
  • Employ leadership and management techniques that result in the improvement in overall quality of care for patients on both the individual and public health levels.
  • Promote advocacy, equity, and inclusion for both patients and healthcare workers in the healthcare environment though collaboration with federal, state, local, and private agencies
  • Apply learned and effective leadership techniques as agents of strategic change, educators, collaborators, and healthcare advisors.

Develop conceptually informed recommendations to make or change healthcare policy structures and processes at a variety of scales and in different policy domains.

Health Business

Employ business and management skills to become agents for positive change in the healthcare industry.

Health Informatics — Practical

Employ information technology and information management concepts and methods to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes.

Health Informatics — Research

Employ information technology and scholarly inquiry concepts and methods to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes.

Health Science

Employ concepts, theories, methods, and models in the application of pharmaceuticals to improve the health of populations of patients within a healthcare system.

Interdisciplinary Healthcare Leadership

Apply advanced and specialized knowledge in areas of individual concentrations to improve individual, local, and global health and to improve the healthcare system in general.
